11.10 Server install - Dell Inspiron 1720 - Locking up during heavy network usage

I've recently started using an old laptop as a home server. I've done a fresh install of 11.10 x64. This is the only OS, so there aren't any dual booting issues. I have it plugged in via ethernet to a Linksys E3000 10/100/1000 ethernet port, but connected at 100 Mbps w/ Full Duplex (laptop limitation).

For whatever reason, I've noticed if I push a lot of data to or from the server, it will lock up. The only way to get it to come out of it is to hold the power button in until it shuts off, give it a second or two, then boot it back up normally.

Unfortunately, I have no idea where to start troubleshooting. I'm at work at the moment, and it's currently locked so I'm unable to get any information; the only information I can provide at the moment is that it's a Broadcom ethernet card, but I'm unsure of the model number.

My Google-fu is failing me on finding any answers, though I did find some info on an issue with an r8169 driver, but I don't think this applies to me. Anyone have any advice one where to start troubleshooting, or where I might find some information on how to resolve this?

please, define "a lot of data".
do you have any packet loss? network errors? and have you tried 10.04 LTS?

Re: 11.10 Server install - Dell Inspiron 1720 - Locking up during heavy network usage

Usually I can routinely crash it while trying to transfer 2-3GB worth of small files... I've gone through and created a bunch of junk files -- 8 of them at 1GB each, then a ton of small files, 100 of them at 1MB, 10MB, 100MB... and of course now it's working fine. Any suggestions as to what to watch for or where to look if it does crash again?

How much memory is installed on the laptop? What else do you have running on the laptop? Have you tweaked any Linux VM settings via sysctl ?

There are 2GB of ram installed. Only other items I have running on it are Apache, MySQL server... pretty sure that's it. Like I said, it's a 5 day old install, no VM tweaks or anything.
