Question Remove Alpha 3 and Start Beta 1 a month earlier?

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/OneiricReleaseSchedule

    May 5th - September 1st - Dev Phase - 4 months
    September 1st - October 6th - Testing Phase - 1 month

Why not move the Beta forward a month before the UI is completely frozen, for more testing and feedback?

Forward? You mean month earlier, backward?
Anyway, Natty-beta was also released after UI Freeze.
I think the 6 month cycle is too short for longer beta testing periods.

    I don't think Natty was well-served by it's roadmap.

Unity was very unpolished for the first beta and the lack of a release candidate lead to the whole "I'm not testing because it's still beta" rubbish I've been hearing daily.

    Well that is true too.
In fact Natty is almost a release version as of today.

    Hi!

As one of the others has posted..We are a subset of a subset.
    (Testers).

    We are the bleeding edge!

I think 6 months is perfect..there are some really smart folks out there working.

My problem was that it's to long, which results in an extended dev phase which results in a need for an extended testing phase, which doesn't exist at the moment.

    Rings true imo.

Because then it would just be Alpha 3 under the wrong name.

Testing does not start with beta 1; it starts on day 1. You have the Alphas of course, and then just general daily testing.

    You can do this yourself

    Code:
    mv natty-alpha3.iso natty-beta1.iso

Re: Remove Alpha 3 and Start Beta 1 a month earlier?

I agree with the core-problem of this discussion: The UI gets shafted pretty hard on the current release-schedule. Alpha-development rarely adresses UI-usability, it weeds out actual errors, crashing and the likes. It's a shame that beta-testers (who are closer to the non-technical end-user compared to alpha-testers, I'd venture) don't get to pitch in with one of the things that they can actually have an equal opinion on: does the interface look and feel good, and what could be done better.

But yeah, time-constraints makes this a tough one. Lesser time for new features? Lesser time for bug-swatting? Or one release per year instead of two? That seems to be the 3 possible answers to this conundrum.

I'd predict more ranting than testing, because Beta seems to be the milestone where a lot of unexperienced users start using the system.

It also seems wrong to me to make substantial changes to a system if it's in its beta state.
