    Samba shares not accessible on OSX

    I have setup Samba shares on my Ubuntu 10.10 and assigned different different username and password combination for each share.

    The sharing works perfectly fine on all the Windows machines but it does not work on OSX. When I try to connect using OSX, it ends up showing waiting icon (screenshot attached) after entering username and password. (It asks for the login details after selecting the share from the list)

    I tried various settings mentioned in many threads but nothing worked for me so far.

    It would be great if anyone can take a look at the settings and tell me if there is any solution to this problem.

    You wanna change:

    ; browseable = yes

    To:

    browesable = yes

    and have you added the user via smbpasswd?

    Command:

    smbpasswd -a <username>


    and for:

    valid users = web1
    valid users = bbwhtml
    valid users = bbw

    you wanna make sure there added into the Samba authenteication file aswell(using smbpasswd).

    Hey Thanks for the reply, I was not sure if the earlier users were added using smbpasswd method or not, so I added the users again, I could see those users already in /etc/samba/smbusers file.

    I also uncommented browseable = yes for all the shares.

    Restarted samba (service smbd restart) but still no luck.

    Any other pointers?

    Hmm :/

    What version of OS X are your running?

    I know 10.6(Snow Leopard) had quite a few issues with smbclient :/

    Also, try changing these lines:

    # wins support = no
    dns proxy = no
    ; name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast

    To:

    wins support = yes
    dns proxy = yes
    name resolve order = wins bcast lmhosts host

    Also - Have you configured:

    netbios name = <ServerName>

    if not, in your smb.conf, just after [global] add:

    netbios name = YourServerNameHere

    Do not use you IP for the netbios name though.

    then run:

    service smbd restart && service nmbd restart

    and try again.

    Also, on the mac(after restarting Samba), try using:

    smb://YourServerNameHere/ShareName

    or to see with list of shares:

    smb://YourServerNameHere

    Also - i cant help too much with these(I dont currently have Hackintosh installed/a mac so i cant help too much on the snow leopard side, but check these out)

    I think it has something to do with the authentication. I changed the security from share to user and it allowed me to connect to one of the shares. But when I changed it back to share, it did not allow me to access it.

    Yeah, that does change some stuff, but OSX should still support shares without authentication :/

    Yup.. shares without authentication shouldn't be a problem but in my case, I need to give access to different folder to different people..
