Not working: Audio over HDMI (Ubuntu 10.10, ATI Radeon Xpress 1200 Series - RS600)

Hello. I'm an advanced computer user - in Windows - but I'm fairly new to Ubuntu. I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop - and I love it - but I am unable to get audio to work over HDMI. It's just silent.

My laptop is an LG (LGE23), model E300, and its playback hardware (from aplay-l) includes:

card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC262 Analog [ALC262 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Audio does work on my laptop, though. It simply will not work over HDMI - i.e., through my LG HD TV.

I have done some searching and tried a number of things on a number of fresh installations. Nothing worked. So, I am hoping that someone here can shed some light. I should note that I never had a problem with HDMI in Windows (Vista) using exactly the same hardware (laptop, cable, TV).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Dunno if this counts as advice, or is even relevant to your laptop model, but I noticed this @ System76.
