    It's a mythical animal.

Personally, I think the name is ridiculous.

I'd have preferred something like Jiving Jackal.

I love it really. The previous names seemed a bit weak and pathetic. I mean if you knew nothing about computers at all, and someone said in the board room, we need to install an OS and distro. We have a choice between "XP" and "daper drake", the boss would think daper drake was a kids version. At least Jaunty Jackalope appeals to adults as well cos it is funny. I do think ubuntu is going to enter e new era of popularity and grow very rapidly. Definately this version will be a time to see if it gets accepted by a much broader community. jaunty Jackalope sticks in my head worse than a Kylie Minogue record too, so should attract attention.

I like the name. There's really no such animal, right?

They are the stuff of legend out here, but still an odd choice.

On the lighter side, we did have our summer intern from Amherst believing in them:

I also like the name - gives the release a "galloping" characteristic

It's a codename - Windows XP's codename was Whistler, Trainyard and Springboard (among others, depending on the actual version), you compare that to Dapper Drake
The official release is with the numbers: Ubuntu 6.06

Actually, you'd tell your boss that it's "Ubuntu 6.06".

On second thoughts, considering that Windows Vista was once called "Longhorn" - a name which conjures some unprofessional images - "Jaunty Jackalope" sounds half-alright actually.
