Issues Installing Ubuntu 8.04 On Inspiron 1420

Ok, I used to run Dapper Drake (6.06 was it?) On my old desktop computer (just a bits and pieces thing I put together) and my old Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop without any real issues, although due to not knowing everything I need to, there was a couple things I never got working.

Anyway, Last year sometime I upgraded my computer to my current laptop, an Inspiron 1420 (1.5MHz dual core, 2gb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS 256MB, etc.) but as the Ubuntu Dell's are not available in Australia to my knowledge, I went with the Windows Vista one, thinking it would be worth looking at.

Now, I don't mind Windows Vista, but thought I would go and give Ubuntu another try, just cos I like it. But don't wanna start from scratch unless I can't get it to work. I went to install it with a Desktop CD, and it would not allow me to start it up, so after reading the forums for a little bit, I tried the alternative Install CD still to no avail. The first part seems to go smoothly enough, but once it starts trying to retrieve the packages I run into problems and it can't find any of them. I can't remember the names of them all, but it is very early in the install process, and first one is console_<something I can't remember right now>

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any idea how to handle this. It would be greatly appreciated.

1st. question: The disks you are trying to install from. Are they "Live" CD's? Can you boot from them? If not, then that's your problem. If they will boot do you get the 1st Ubuntu splash screen with a menu? Did you select the Option "Install"? The downloaded version from Ubuntu seems to have problems with simple installing. It works fine as an "Up-grade", but I've had problems trying to do a "clean" install with it.

The first one I tried was the Live CD. It loads when I put it in my drive in windows Vista, and when I boot with it in it does come up with the splash screen going on about Running/Checking CD/Boot From Hard disk etc. However when I check the CDs integrity it fails to read from CD, and same thing happens when I go to Start Ubuntu.

The other disk is the alternative disk that runs the text based installer. That is the one the installation starts to work, but doesn't find whatever packages it needs to find. Then when I run the CD integrity check it fails it. As the only solutions I have found involve completing the installation off this Alternative disk, I have no idea how to proceed from here. Could it be related to Windows Vista?

I am currently trying to install it through windows which eliminates the chance of it being my optical drive. I don't know how much use doing it like this is going to be though.
