Hardy is BY FAR the worst Ubuntu version yet. LOCKUP WARNING!!!

Some users, myself included, are experiencing random total lockups. The systems are freezing up so tight there's no way to get diagnostics info. It's affecting different video chipsets, different WiFi chipsets, some Ethernet users, there is NO pattern to the hardware involved.

A bug has been issued to the kernel team, priority high, marked "triaged":

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/204996

Today I did a fresh install from the release CD, standard 32bit, Intel945 video, Atheros WiFi, all standard parts on an Acer laptop that handled Feisty and Gutsy like a champ. No overheating. 1.5gigs RAM, swap stats show zero use so it's not corrupted swap.

I don't think the devs are going to be able to fix this one easily. There's just NO feedback or debugging info possible. When Fedora 9 releases I may be forced to abandon ship.

    This really sucks.

Why move to Fedora? Why not just use Gusty which worked so well? That is what I did.

I fixed the issue myself by installing a 2.6.23 kernel. (installed myself).

qball: do you mean "compiled it yourself"? I'm considering doing that with .25 .

But there's a bigger issue and this addresses Hunter: first, something has gone tragically wrong with how Hardy error-traps. Linux is flat-out NOT supposed to do this.

Second, I install and support desktop Linux setups for clients, on average a new one every month or so. I have to be concerned about them, going into the future. Ubuntu has taken a huge steaming dump on it's user base. Hardy should have been delayed a month or more. I don't know that it's right for me to chain them to something that's gone visibly diseased.

2.6.24-12 version is obsolete. Hardy version for release is 2.6.24-16.

I'm using an acer laptop (5520eg) and my hardy 64bits works perfectly. Bad luck, maybe.

Give freedom to people, let them say what they feel, the man is sick and tried, if he feels like going to what ever, he is free !!

I'm going to have to disagree with you. The Linksys WUSB54Gv4 wireless adapter on my desktop, the Broadcom (yes, Broadcom!) wireless card on one of my laptops, and my NVIDIA 8800GTS 512 graphics card are working "out of the box." In Gutsy and Feisty, I had to install all of those things manually. For the noob, Hardy has better default apps (especially Firefox), and (is it just me?) faster performance than it predecessors. On a side note, sound recorder now works for me because of the inclusion of Pulse audio.

So it locks up...blame it on the drivers, not the OS. It's the price we pay for having either bleeding edge tech or antiquated tech. From what I can surmise from the posts I read in these forums, most people find Hardy a vast improvement; and I guess that those people have mid-range rigs.

I agree!!! My Dell C400 is freezing once an hour. No debug info at all... But I hope it will be fixed.
