Gedit takes 15 seconds to open and 6 to close

I have already disabled the extra plugins in the settings, and that has changed nothing. Gedit takes 15-20 seconds to invoke and 6 seconds to shut down. Gedit seems to cause Ubuntu/unity to become unresponsive for a few seconds as well.

I repeat the "workaround" of unchecking the browser plugin has no effect on this delay.

How much free space do you have in your /home partition? Have you run an fsck lately?

Any strange errors if you open it from a terminal? That may give you a clue about why it's happening.
