    Exclamation Ubuntu + Gnome 2 + Compiz

For many hardcore Ubuntu users, Ubuntu + Gnome 2 + Compiz still represents Desktop Nirvana. For these users, the cliff arrives when 10.04 LTS goes out of support in April, and although there are alternatives, all of them require trade-offs and compromises.

Under the hood, Ubuntu is the most powerful and flexible OS there is and that, in a future of walled gardens and locked down OSes, is worth real money, money which Canonical apparently needs urgently.

So I propose that users dissatisfied with the current direction each pledge to pay a minimum of $100 US, payable in advance, to fund a Premium Edition (Ubuntu + Gnome 2 + Compiz), in return for a copy of the same.

Please post, and pledge here, if you are interested. If sufficient interest is generated, coordination will follow.

Edit: Just to make sure there is no misunderstanding. The idea would be to commit to pay Canonical for the OS if they could be persuaded to produce it.

Not interested but I want to mention Linux Mint 13 Maya has MATE (based on GNOME 2), Debian 6 "Squeeze" has GNOME 2.30. MATE could be added to the official Ubuntu repository.

I'm not sure how appropriate it is to ask for pledges, but that's not my call

OTOH I'd point to this project:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...79&postcount=1

I'm reasonably certain that the project will come to fruition because the meta package "ubuntu-gnome-desktop" does now exist in the Quantal repos.

Since compiz is not even installed by default there appear to be few obstacles to getting a working classic DE running with that as a base ......... but I've only done a bit of preliminary testing

Not interested, sorry. You can't stay in the past, but you can recreate it. There's GNOME Classic, Xfce, LXDE, ... IMO GNOME Classic resembles GNOME 2 the most, and the GNOME Classic with effects session uses Compiz. Just install gnome-panel, log out, log into GNOME Classic w/ effects and done.

The GNOME Ubuntu project seems promising, if you want to get rid of Unity and only want GNOME Shell and GNOME Classic.

I liked GNOME 2, but there are better options out there now. Check out LXDE, XFCE, Mate, KDE, Enlightenment etc. to see what you like. All these projects are being actively developed while GNOME 2 is ten feet under and pushing up dasies.

    Re: Ubuntu + Gnome 2 + Compiz

The problem here I think is that a lot of users make the mistake of thinking Gnome 2 = Gnome 2 UI. But it's not the case really.
Gnome 3 is better. Has better libraries and the whole 9 yards. The difference is just merely in how the UI rolls out.
As someone pointed out there is "Gnome Classic" but I find it a bit lackluster as well.

Personally I just think the issue here is Compiz. And with saying that goes X.org. Maybe Wayland will fix a lot of this, time will tell. But one thing is for sure, Gnome 2 is obsolete.

    Moved to Recurring.

Gnome 2 is dead, might as well accept it.

However MATE (fork of GNOME 2 Desktop Environment) development status is still active.
