Question Buying a Laptop in the UK with Ubuntu pre-installed / no-OS

    Hey guys

I have been using Ubuntu for the last 3 years (1.5 years as my only OS) but I need to buy a new laptop (screen is broken).

In the UK where can I buy a laptop (or notebook probably) with Ubuntu preinstalled?
(or at least without Windows installed)

I have a few different solutions depending on what you want to do:

First off you can buy a windows pc, purge it of the evil, and then install ubuntu on it, this is the easiest, but also the most expensive option.

Secondly, you can search for people who are selling laptops, often people will sell computers well below price because they have a broken OS that they do not know how to fix. some such sites are craiglist.com (a site that connects users with local sellers) and ebay.com (it's ebay). This is potentially the cheapest option, but it also carries a fair amount of risk as sometimes sellers will lie about issues and/or will not know about them.

Thirdly, if you really want a custom experience without the taint of Windows, you can build your own computer, I personally have built 2 computers to run ubuntu on and it's a breeze, but laptops are a little harder to do. This is the most involved option, but it's the most fun.

I think all manufacturers will sell without a OS.

System 76 is one pre-install, here are others.

    Hi Matt,

I have found that Novatech (based in Portsmouth I believe) sell laptops with no Operating System installed:

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/laptop/

For example, the Novatech nSpire 2760 seems a good spec (quad core i7, USB3, etc):

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/laptop/range/nspire2760.html

Also, you can customise them when ordering (so you can get the above laptop with 8Gb RAM and a 1Tb HDD).

I have no experience of the company, so can't comment on how good the laptops are, although I've seen a few good reviews, but it may be worth a look.

    Kind regards,

    Adam.

P.S. Don't get a laptop with nVidia Optimus (dedicated graphics card), they don't work well with Ubuntu, so I've heard anyway. Better to get Intel integrated graphics I would think.
