    Question Preferred Bible version that's available in Xiphos?

    First of all, please forgive me if this isn't the most appropriate place to post a question like this (mods, feel free to move this thread somewhere else if you like), but this is a real burning question for me.

    <snip>

    I Googled something similar to my question, and I got lots of recommendations for the NIV, NKJV, NASB, and the like, but there's one slight problem -- those Bible translations are all copyrighted and are therefore not available in Xiphos. Therefore, for those of you that like to use Xiphos for your daily Bible study, what version of the Bible do y'all use and recommend?

    Thanx in advance,
    Fred

    Have you heard that Microsoft bought Hoover Vacuum? Now they finally have a product that doesn't suck!

    This is totally off of your topic, but as a person who views religion as a very very private thing, I want to thank you. This is the first time I have seen a post in forum that was religious in nature, and still in (in my opinion) the right place and the right tone.

    Good luck with your search.

    I use "Youversion" for my android phone and love it. Anyway i did a google search and found that mozilla has an add on for mozilla and a website so you can use online. I do not see a linux download, so you may be limited if you cannot get online.

    If you find something that you can get offline let us know I would be interested in that (actually i use my phone mainly-have NASD, The Message, Holman and ESV stored-all free)

    That is because the forum code of conduct forbids it.

    Well I still use the KJV or derivatives (MKJV,AKJV, etc) and since that is what we teach out of in our church it goes hand in hand. However, the ESV is a very good and modern translation that is available in the Sword repositories. Try that one.

    Also to quote from the MySword.info/contact-us website:

    We encourage users to use public domain or free copyrighted Bibles so that in the future if technology changed again there will not be a problem in shifting Bible formats. For:

    NIV / ESV ----> NET / WEB / NHEB alternative
    NKJV ----> MKJV / KJV2000 / VW alternative
    NLT ----> BBE / ISV alternative
    So hopefully this will help you.

    Shalom and God Bless.

    Re: Preferred Bible version that's available in Xiphos?

    Usually, I just use the KJV (I tend towards the "Byzantine priority" view, prefer formal equivalence over functional equivalence, and for some reason I also find the KJV easier to follow than new translations), but I also use several other versions:
    1. EMTV -a good, readable but fairly literal Majority Text-based NT.
    2. Darby -a literal translation (c. 1900), using an NU/"Critical Text" NT
    The translator was a founder of the Plymouth Brethren and one of the early dispensationalists, but it isn't distorted to enhance his position. The notes are available separately, FWIW.
    3. AB (Apostle's Bible) -the main English translation of the Septuagint. I use this mainly for comparison with the quotations in the NT, but also because sometimes comparing the Septuagint and the Masoretic Text helps clarify stuff.
    (Speaking of which, Leeser and JPS are Jewish translations of the OT...)
    4-? LITV (Greene's Literal Version)- Among the most literal translations. I'd really rather use the ALT, but it's not available for SWORD (yet).
    I'll sometimes compare with the Geneva Bible.
    The MKJV & AKJV are decent revisions of the KJV for modern language.
    The UKJV is completely mislabeled (it's a new version, they started with the text of the KJV but revised it by comparison with modern translations) and has no original-language scholarship behind it, IIRC.
    The NET is a decent translation based on the NU text.
    The ESV is also available for SWORD; I'm not aware of the (scholarly) reasons to prefer the NET or ESV over the other.
    The ISV uses the Dead Sea Scrolls text for part of the OT; I'm not sure what they used for the NT. It also attempts to preserve the literal sense, as well as the original style (poetic passages are rendered as such), but uses a measure of functional equivalence. I haven't checked it out, but I may soon.
