This is why Banshee crashed. Something must have recently trashed your banshee.db file. A loss of power to your computer or system crash could have caused this problem, if Banshee was running at the time.

Unfortunately, this problem isn't uncommon. It's so common, in fact, that it earned a spot on Banshee's FAQ list (see the bottom of the page). To summarize, this problem can often be fixed by running the following commands:

First, you'll need sqlite3 installed. I think this should do the trick:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install sqlite3
    Then run:
    Code:
    cd ~/.config/banshee-1
    Code:
    sqlite3 banshee.db ".dump" > dump
    Code:
    mv banshee.db banshee.db.backup
    Code:
    cat dump | sqlite3 banshee.db
Or, if you don't care about saving your playlists, ratings, and play count information, you can just delete (or rename) the bad database, found here: ~/.config/banshee-1/banshee.db

If you have any problems, be sure to report back here. Hope this helps!

    Re: Banshee Crashed

I hope it's not too late to join in this discussion, because I, too, have had a Banshee "fatal error," but I tried the fix recommended and it did nothing to fix the sqlite database. I have a LOT of playlists representing a considerable amount of time invested (playlists by composer, performer[s], orchestras, conductors, genre, categories and subcategories). I have dozens of hours invested in creating these playlists. Starting from scratch would probably mean just dumping Banshee for a more stable equivalent; but I'd rather not re-create my datalists or change music players if I can help it.

Here is the original error message:

    Re: Banshee Crashed

Ouch, that doesn't look good. I don't exactly know what went wrong or how to fix it, because I was mostly copying and pasting those instructions from the Banshee website. I can, however, recommend asking the Banshee community about this. I'd ask a question on the mailing list (which you can also do using the forum interface). If you don't get a response there, you can ask about it on Banshee's IRC channel. It might take a little while for someone to answer, but if you're patient, I'm sure someone will want to help.

Also, you might want to try looking at your Banshee database in a database browser. I don't remember which one I've used before, but you should find something if you search in the Software Center for SQLite3 Database Browser. That way you can have a look around, and see if anything looks obviously wrong with the database. You'll probably want to make a backup first, though:

    Code:
    cp ~/.config/banshee-1/banshee.db ~/.config/banshee-1/banshee.backup.db
If anyone is going to be able to fix the database, they'll probably want to have a copy to look at. If you don't mind sharing your database, it would be best if you would have some way to get it onto the Internet (Ubuntu One or Dropbox would both be good options). If you post it somewhere that I can get to it, I'll be happy to take a look at it and see if I can figure anything out. My SQL skills are a bit weak, but there are definitely people more capable than me in the Banshee community who will probably be glad to help.

    Good luck!

    Re: Banshee Crashed

@boombox1387, thanks so much for your reply.

After following your original advice (including cp'ing the corrupted database before running the fix), things looked very grim. Banshee still wouldn't load. Then it finally came up, but with an almost out-of-the-box set of playlists. (Strange to say, it remembered some "Unplayed" items from December.) Time to call it a day, power down, and go to bed.

However, the next morning when the audio server booted, Banshee loaded just fine -- with all of my dozens of playlists were fully restored! I don't know why a reboot was required. My guess is that some temporary files are deleted or reset on system power down, but that's just a shot in the dark. Anyway, everything is back the way it should be, and my confidence in Banshee and sqlite is restored. (And, more importantly, my wife didn't lose faith in Linux or Ubuntu or Banshee. This project of digitizing and cross-referencing [as it were] her very large collection of [mostly] classical CDs is my year-long "Christmas present" to her. I started it November '10, and at an average of one CD per day, the task will take me well into 2012 before it's complete. Losing that database would have been "epic fail.")

I do back up all our Ubuntu machines daily with CrashPlan, but it was unclear to me how far back I would have had to go (and how many entries I would have lost) in order to restore an uncorrupted version of the database. Happily, none of the FLAC files were affected.

Once again, many thanks for your assistance.
