Upgraded to Karmic, and motd stopped updating
I upgraded my server from Jaunty to Karmic over the weekend, and I've been having a little trouble with the motd. I really like the extra landscape info, and I'd like to begin adding my own scripts...

Re: Upgraded to Karmic, and motd disappeared
Thanks! That's what the problem was, apparently. The 'Banner' line was commented out. When I uncommented it, it printed the contents of /etc/issue.net. I changed the line to 'Banner /etc/motd',...

Take a look at Tasksel - you can simply run `sudo tasksel` and select LAMP server, and it should automatically install the stack through apt-get and configure it for you.

Re: Screen resolution gets reset after every reboot
The problem is that the Nvidia Settings program is not set up to run with root privelages, so it can't write to the /etc/X11 directory. Try using Alt+F2 to open the Run Command dialog, and then...

Are there any entries in your /etc/hosts file that would interfere with these sites?

Re: Booting faster after the upgrade?
I usually do a fresh install with each release to avoid issues like this. I keep my /home folder on a separate partition, so all of my settings and files are preserved each time I upgrade.
When I...

Re: hello... need help with monitor resolution settings
Well, I know one way to try to solve this problem, but it's relatively advanced and might not be very easy for a newcomer to Linux. I'll go ahead and throw this out there, but if anyone else knows...

Re: Wireless nonger working with kernel 2.6.27-9
Alright, I found the answer. The old ath_pci module from MadWifi is deprecated because it depends on a proprietary component. It's been replaced by the fully open-source ath5k module, but it's not...

Re: Ubuntu 8.10, trying to install EnvyNG, it says already installed but I can't find
I tried EnvyNG on Intrepid at first, also, but then ended up not needing it. I don't think the GTK package is working with Intrepid. It didn't matter, though - the nvidia-glx-177 package included...

It's still Intrepid Ibex, it just uses a desktop environment called XCFE instead of the default Gnome desktop environment. You can download it here: http://www.xubuntu.org/get#intrepid

That's correct. I used Xubuntu on a laptop with similar limitations, and it performed very well. I'd definitely recommend it for low-end PCs!

I've got an HP Photosmart 8250, and it works quite well in Hardy. I would definitely join you in recommending HP for Linux.
