Re: HOWTO: Terminal for desktop background.

I have the same problem, but I don't understand what you mean. I know how to save my session when I log out, but what is it that I'm supposed to delete?

Also, since I tried to save the session...

Re: HOWTO: Terminal for desktop background.

This is pretty neat, but I can't paste anything into the eterm window. Ctrl-V doesn't work, middle mouse button doesn't work, and there's no context menu with edit functions. Is this normal?

    If it...

Re: Howto: Backup and restore your system!

Thanks for that tip about the sticky bit.

Phew. Glad that actually worked :) Ubuntu is now the sole OS on my laptop. Excellent thread!

Re: Howto: Backup and restore your system!

Ok, I got it to boot... sort of. During the initial startup, everything looked ok except for these two lines:

WARNING: .udevdb already exists on the old /dev/!
    ...
    /dev/hda2 has gone 49710...

Re: Howto: Backup and restore your system!

I'm restoring from my backup right now. I followed your steps, although I wasn't able to eject the knoppix cd to extract the backup from my DVDRW. I had to put the backup.tgz in a shared folder on my...

Re: Howto: Backup and restore your system!

Isn't there some way to preserve the original file attributes and ownership when you extract them using tar? According the the man pages for tar the -p flag preserves permissions and --same-owner...

Re: Howto: Backup and restore your system!

In that case, I think I'll wait to attempt my re-partition and restore O_o

    Thanks for the heads up.

Re: Howto: Backup and restore your system!

GRUB should still work fine. I'm not actually going to format the entire drive, but rather delete the existing partitions, create new ones, and format them for linux. The MBR, where GRUB is...

Re: Howto: Backup and restore your system!

I've managed to back up my Ubuntu install on my laptop to a windows network drive using this guide. Right now I'm backing up the stuff on the windows partition using Ghost.

    When that's done, I'm...

Re: Howto: Backup and restore your system!

    Excellent guide :)

I'd like to try this, but I have very limited space on this hard drive (laptop) and I'm pretty certain I don't have room to generate the backup here. Is there a way to redirect...

Re: HOWTO: Hear multiple sounds using Both ESD & ALSA

Well, I did that, but it would just play a series of pc speaker beeps and the interface sounds in Ubuntu still wouldn't play. It would only work if I rebooted.

Fortunately, I don't have to worry...
  12. Re: HOWTO: StreamTuner + StreamRipper, another way to get music.

    Well, there is one annoyance...
streamripper doesn't cleanly seperate songs, at least not on club977. It usually takes several seconds after a crossfade for it to realize the song has changed and...
  13. Re: HOWTO: StreamTuner + StreamRipper, another way to get music.

I just love this forum :D I keep finding cool stuff to do with Ubuntu.

    Thanks!

Edit: This is one neat program. I'm recording a stream on my Ubuntu-equipped notebook without playback, and I'm...

Re: HOWTO: Hear multiple sounds using Both ESD & ALSA

Excellent how-to. Most of my games (UT2004, SimCity 3000U, Enemy Territory) required that I kill esd before being able to play with sound, and I always had to reboot afterward to get sound in Ubuntu...
  15. Re: HowTo: Web embedded media without firefox plugins.

Outstanding! I was never able to get vlc and its mozilla plugin to work, but this worked perfectly on the first try. I'm using totem-xine for playback, and it works great. Thanks!
  16. Re: 2D performance becomes unplayable for no apparent reason

    4662 frames in 5.0 seconds = 932.400 FPS

That's on an Inspiron 8500 notebook with a 2.2ghz P4-M and a Radeon Mobility 9000 32mb. Not exactly a stellar video card, but at least it works properly...
  17. Re: 2D performance becomes unplayable for no apparent reason

That fixed it! I used the apt-get package version, and everything works great now. Thanks!
  18. Re: 2D performance becomes unplayable for no apparent reason

Ok, I'll give that a shot. I avoided doing this to begin with since it appeared the default drivers were working fine, but I guess I was mistaken :)

    Thanks again for your help.
  19. Re: HOWTO: Compiling and Installing WineCVS with WineTools

I followed the guide exactly and I get this in the terminal repeatedly when I try to run the base setup from winetools:

Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate loadable module in module_path:...
  20. Re: 2D performance becomes unplayable for no apparent reason

It's averaging about 850 fps. This is on a Radeon Mobility 9000 32mb.
    Thanks for helping out btw.
  21. Re: 2D performance becomes unplayable for no apparent reason

Does anyone have a clue why its doing this? I also noticed that the "fade" effect when opening the logout menu is very slow. This doesn't happen on the Knoppix live cd; it's smooth and fast there.
  22. 2D performance becomes unplayable for no apparent reason

Earlier today I installed penguin-command and wesnoth, and both ran great. Nice and smooth, just like they should be. Just now I tried penguin-command and it was so slow it was completely unplayable....
