Hi,
I had a quick glance at the User Manual. Apparently the computer can boot in UEFI mode. You seem to already have established that Windows 7 is installed in Legacy mode. Is it worth checking...
Hi,
Reading the documentation you linked to, it seems like 'Rescue Mode' is a different copy of Linux running on the same machine (like a LiveCD or an External Disk).
The files you want are on a...
Hi,
Sometimes an Android phone won't appear on your desktop without first having to be configured. They can support a number of different ways of communicating with your computer. One of the easier...
Sorry, I just realised I read your first post wrong, and it was the 'ethtool eth0' command which threw up the permission error.Did you use sudo to run the 'ethtool -s eth0 wol d' command? Could you...
Hi,
You said in point 9 that you ran:
ethtool -s eth0 wol d
and the terminal reported:
Cannot get current wake-on-lan settings: Operation not permitted
not setting wol
Glad you got it working. I agree about it being more difficult.
With regards to the blog post there were a few key steps right at the top of the post, with other advice being a bit more general....
You mean this CD?
ubuntu-12.04.1-alternate-amd64+mac.iso
In this case alternate refers to the fact that the CD is a text based installer, and is different from the desktop, live CD. The +mac bit...
Thats good news.
Good luck with the fresh install.
I haven't any real ideas, sorry.
Maybe you could look at nouveau's troubleshooting pages:

Sorry for the lack of credit. Thanks for the help in the other thread.
Your post said you have Nvidia Optimus, which implies you have two graphics cards, an integrated Intel Graphics Card, and a descrete Nvidia Graphics Card. You can check which graphics cards you have...
The Ubuntu 12.04.1 release should have a more recent version of the 2.6.0-x kernel. According to Zdnet it will be released in a few days. Perhaps you could try it when it's released.

I don't think any of the Ubuntu 12.04 iso images will have kernel version 3.2.0-27. They don't tend to get updated between releases. You might get the latest kernel if you install Ubuntu 11.10 and...
Hi,
Since your computer has the same graphics card as the Macbook Air 3,2, this might be relavent:

In that case...
Hi,
The Macbook Pro 8,1 has an Intel HD 3000 GPU, and the person who wrote that thread you linked to assumes an Nvidia GPU:
If your using Intel drivers, then you might want to try these...
I know that Macs don't generally boot Ubuntu off USB when booting in BIOS Compatibility mode. Booting from a CD should work, but I have had problems in the past.
I don't have an SSD drive, just...
p.s. Did you try the 'amd64+mac.iso'? That CD only boots in BIOS compatibility mode, so I would have expected it to work.
Hi,
I have the Macbook 7,1. I've found that:
The Nvidia drivers fail to work when booting in EFI mode and result with, like you describe, a blank screen.
The Nvidia drivers work when booting...
That sounds about right. The amd64+mac CD is just like the normal CD, except that it only supports BIOS booting (Windows Boot).

I guess when installing with EFI mode (from the CD or using USB), you have to be aware of possible firmware corruption.
You could upgrade from an earlier version of Ubuntu, although you might have problems with individual applications. It sounded like lael was suggesting installing from the amd64+mac variant of Ubuntu...
You can add the kernel parameter after "quiet splash".
If that doesn't work you might want to try removing "quiet splash" from the list of parameters. That should cause Ubuntu to boot in text...
When you boot in EFI mode a Grub 2 menu appears. The method for adding boot parameters (such as nomodeset) is different in Grub 2. See this post:

I thought that since they described how the program worked in the thread, it might be possible to find tools to do the same thing in Linux.
Interacting with the Embedded Controller (EC) mentioned...
