    Re: open a new folder

Keyboard shortcuts are probably even more useful in Ubuntu 18.04 than they were in 16.04. Anyone not familiar with them should open Help to get the Ubuntu Desktop Guide then search for shortcuts.
  2. Re: Backups to new 1TB external HDDs running extremely slowly

So it does! Thanks for that, rbmorse. I'm beginning to feel a bit foolish but I've never been a drag-and-dropper, always copy-and-paste, and the window just seemed dead. As they say, you live and...

    Re: open a new folder

I guess lets was looking for a way to achieve the task in the window rather than using terminal. I've just upgraded to 18.04LTS and had to get used to the many changes, especially the much reduced...
  4. Re: Backups to new 1TB external HDDs running extremely slowly

I've realised that readers might be wondering why I didn't try making and transferring an archive before I started this thread. I did try, but Archive Manager isn't working for me. It's only a few...
  5. Re: Backups to new 1TB external HDDs running extremely slowly

Thanks for that John, I'll note down the command so I can use ext4.

My problem with the slow transfers seems to be resolved. If I use `Compress' in the file manager to make a zip file of my backup...
  6. Re: Backups to new 1TB external HDDs running extremely slowly

As mentioned above, I formatted it to ext4 but then couldn't copy & paste files to it, or create folders on it etc via the file manager.
  7. Re: Backups to new 1TB external HDDs running extremely slowly

Thanks for the quick responses and I apologise for being late replying.

Autodave: Initially I used the disks as received (ntfs) as I've read that Ubtuntu should work with that and also it allows...
  8. Backups to new 1TB external HDDs running extremely slowly

Hi, I'm having trouble with new Seagate and Toshiba 1TB external HDDs running extremely slow when trying to do backups. My old 500MB Toshiba still works fine and access to other storage such as USB...

    [ubuntu] Re: GPU hang/error

Yes, it's a real hassle and happens with 12.04 64-bit too. I'm still stuck with booting into an older kernel to avoid freezes. At first I thought my computer had died and I bought a new one only to...
  10. [all variants] Re: Bug: Updated xserver-xorg-video-intel to crash xorg

Reports have already been filed by others. On my PC when I got a message telling me to report an error I tried but it came up with a message saying something like "Pangolin development is complete...

jonnymopar, in case it's a related problem have a look at this thread (but ignore the title):

  12. [all variants] Re: Bug: Updated xserver-xorg-video-intel to crash xorg

Very true. I've now got the problem too and I'm disappointed because I've been using Ubuntu for about 6 years with no serious problems, never needed any help (even though I'm not a techie) and have...

Re: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows

This message "Unable to mount location, failed to retrieve share list from server" seems to crop up often in the forums and cause a lot of people trouble. Have a look at this thread:...

[SOLVED] Re: Help, my windows network no longer works...

After unsuccessfully trying other things, I un-installed Samba and then re-installed it on all my PCs. Now the network is functioning again. I still think the problem was caused by an Ubuntu update....

[SOLVED] Re: Help, my windows network no longer works...

Well, it didn't work on the second computer. And after shutting down the first one for lunch and then restarting it, the network again doesn't work on that one either.

    I've tried rebooting the...

[SOLVED] Re: Help, my windows network no longer works...

Jay2001's solution has worked for me, at least on one computer. There was a backup of the smb.conf from May 21st so I renamed the backup as the smb.conf and made the problem file smb.conf.old and now...

[SOLVED] Re: Help, my windows network no longer works...

Since yesterday my network has been inaccessible and I'm getting exactly the same as Jay2001. I suspect it is due to one of the Ubuntu updates loaded in the last few days because nothing else has...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: No longer getting network at startups. Need to restart every time

I've ended up going for the static IP option on the problem PC. After plenty of help from the Linux-knowledgeable colleague, we couldn't find anything that made the DHCP work on that computer...
  19. [ubuntu] Re: No longer getting network at startups. Need to restart every time

    As requested, etc/network/interfaces file

    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback

    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet dhcp

The colleague mentioned above suggested that I went to the /etc/rcS.d folder and...
  20. [ubuntu] Re: No longer getting network at startups. Need to restart every time

No, a wired network card, that is all. And no vmware as far as I know (I don't know what it is). These computers were built in about 2005 as Windows PCs, then Ubuntu Dapper, then Hardy. The PC giving...
  21. [ubuntu] Re: No longer getting network at startups. Need to restart every time

Hi, thanks for helping! I'm not very knowledgeable about computers although I've been using Ubuntu for a couple of years. I'm not sure what you mean by `a large number of interfaces' I have not, to...
  22. [ubuntu] Re: No longer getting network at startups. Need to restart every time

Still no success. I still can't get the problem PC to auto start the network at boot even though this one does auto start and they are on the same router and I've now changed both the network cards...

[ubuntu] Re: Should the Network Manager icon flash?

Using a different network cable makes no difference. The icon still flashes. But that's not necessarily important, just a curiosity. The important thing is that I still can't get that PC to auto...

philinux, it's not the network monitor (on which the little screen flashes with network activity), but the network manager.
