Thanks for help.
I won't try for 22.04 but go for 23.04. Then at a later stage move back to LTS. Even after that it seems better not to migrate on from there to the next LTS until forced.

I moved onto 22.10 with gnome, not sure why as I usually stay with LTS.
Now the support for 22.10 has stopped. Am happy to do a new install. Is it safe just to backup data, install 22.04 on a new...
I think I must have made a mistake before over the soft links, now I am getting emacs working the same as you ( what we call properly ) but not gedit, see below. However it does mean that by leaving...
Couldn't get emacs to work as you stated, perhaps I have misunderstood something.
Well, I had thought that it was the desktop that was not behaving as I would like but then changed my mind a bit...
Yes, I can see what is happening. The backup files being in the desktop directory can be lived with but I suppose there is no way to stop the links to them automatically appearing on the desktop...
So first I have a text file and create a link to it from the desktop. This works fine.
If I then use that link to access the file ( let's say xxx.txt ) I end up in gedit with the file as expected....
This printer was working last time I used it a week or two ago and now this.
The printer is recognised as on the system and jobs are put on the jobs queue with the message, for example, printing...
Machine is an acer extensa 4220, just set up with a new system, 16.04. Was previously running 14.04 without any wifi problems. Also the router seems fine, I can connect my phone to it using wifi.

I am able to display all files using "ls -a" from the command line but they are missing otherwise, see title.
For example, "ls -a" displays in part:

ok, so all a misundering ( by me ). thanks for all the help, I'll mark as solved.
This turns out to be more complicated than I thought.
I suspected it was not an error when I first saw it but wasn't sure. I had already ignored it and continued as you suggested before making the...
I think you need to use the terminal for that and the find command.
Open a terminal, Applications->Accessories->terminal under gnome.
Type in:
man find
to get the manual, or more...
No arguing with 3999 > 3869 but the dd was only asked to copy the first partition, and about 1000 < 3869. When source is really bigger than destination it gives an error message.

I'm trying to follow this to install gnome

It seems to work well generally for others, not for me

I went and bought another flash USB today and set it up, it was fine.
I did as you suggested but rather as expected it didn't work. The transfer was of about 1GB from partition 1 of the ok system...
You certainly need to boot from a live CD to start messing with moving partitions. Also the thing to remember is that it's dangerous, a mistake can be very costly. I would see it as essential to buy...
Agree over usb's, would rather get them working though. I think I may have got two different usb's confused when I concluded "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sd? bs=4096" didn't help. The symptoms are at...
I have isolsted the problem a bit but not solved.
It makes no difference what OS or iso I try to load, the list of files copied to the drive varies each time and of course it never boots.
I'd...
You can see here it is just not putting on all the files on the USB. Next I'll try downloading an ISO image from this site and then comparing it to the one I'm already using.

Thanks for infomation
This is where I got it from. A fresh the iso image was downloaded by the program in each case.

I went through the USB creation process but am now unable to boot from the usb. I know my bios is caplable of booting USB's.

Well, it managed to fix it in any case. I noticed all the /boot files had new date and time stamps, were they just the same files as before?
Of course with a different problem I can see that you...
Well, I tried boot-repair again, I must have done it just as you were posting. And this time it did come up with
/boot detected. Please check the options. Then, almost to my horror it said it was...
I haven't tried anything yet though I'm feeling ( without my computer ) almost as if my legs have been cut off.
Just to clarify things a bit, sda1, the /boot partition, is not encypted. The error...
Hi,
I think while trying to install a MS-DOS on a usb drive I accidentilly wrote an MBR in the wrong place. Now the system won't boot.
I tried boot-repair automatic solution, I believe it wrote...
