Just to let people know, it's often not necessary to reinstall the OS to get SCIM working in Anki. Found this article with explanation:

I'm running the 10.04 beta and everything works fine apart from gnome panel, which simply fails to start if scim is installed and set to run at start-up. I've confirmed it's scim by uninstalling etc....
Thanks but unfortunately that hasn't solved the problem. Anything along the lines of reinstalling doesn't seem to fix it...
After upgrading to 9.10 SCIM fails to load. The usual control+space trigger has no effect, and running "scim" in terminal shows why:
