Re: Finally MS Office 2010 works on Ubuntu.

PlayOnLinux is good - and their Office2010 installer works pretty well. Lots of issues with Outlook SP1+ though.
If you can get the pre-SP1 32bit version it apparently works.
  2. Poll: Re: Ubuntu Habits Manifesting In Windows

Been doing this one for 15 years... you'd think I'd know by now :D
How about hitting the "win/super" key and starting to type something, only to realize that Windows doesn't work that way?
  3. Re: What you would like to see, changed or fixed in Precise Pangolin ?

Ubuntu-Tweak, MyUnity, and CCSM give you unbelievable customizations for 12.04
  4. Re: What you would like to see, changed or fixed in Precise Pangolin ?

I'm happier with 12.04 than I've been with an Ubuntu release since 9.04 - but I'd like to see empathy either come up to the level of pidgin or go away entirely.

    Specifically - SIPE integration...

Re: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - Precise Pangolin

    I think you're about right.
I *hated* Unity until 12.04, just couldn't stand it. I've now been actually liking it... though admittedly I installed myunity, ubuntu tweak AND ccsm to get it tweaked...

Re: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - Precise Pangolin

What I usually do is keep my home directory separate (or backed up), which preserves the majority of your config.
Then, back up your package list and keep the ones you want to install on the new...

Re: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - Precise Pangolin

I'm planning to do a full install, probably one week after official release.

Then, my 12.04 daily/beta VM will get shut down until it's time to resurrect it as the 12.10 daily/beta VM :)

    I went...

[SOLVED] Re: Any easy GUI sftp?

Just thought I would point out you can do this directly from Nautilus.

Just go to "File|Connect to server" then pull down "Type".

It even supports hopping through multiple hosts - I use it all...

    [SOLVED] Re: gnome3 restarting?

Not sure what video you're running - but for me, switching to the fglrx-devel fixed my crashes on the current kernel.

    Re: Any Advantages to Ubuntu?

I sure agree with that! I actually saved my .profile and .gnome/etc files for the longest time so every machine I used "felt" the same.

    Re: Any Advantages to Ubuntu?

I think the #1 advantage in my book is that it stays out of the way.

I like an OS that stays out of the way.

The best part is you can determine exactly how much or how little OS you have, and...

Poll: Re: What is your age and what do you use ubuntu for?

Doesn't hurt that MS has dramatically changed how just about everything works, and where it is located, version to version.

I bet every time MS releases a new OS the downloads for Ubuntu skyrocket.

Re: I upgraded to 12.04 and HATE the Desktop.

This is a reasonable time frame - but for some of us, we spent a LOT more time than this and it never got better.
I used it as my daily for a good month, and found that I would rather boot into...

So you don't even accept a beer from your friends? Dang, that's harsh.

    Does beer count?

Re: I upgraded to 12.04 and HATE the Desktop.

True enough - I thought Unity was a violent upheaval, but Metro (win 8 ) is like being kicked repeatedly in the face.
  19. Re: At what point do you think of yourself as a Linux "Guru" or "Professional"?

I've been 'professional' ever since I had to support an SAP implementation on RH 6.5, and professional on Unix for many years prior.

Guru? Not so much. My opinion of my own skills tends to vary...

    Re: Does anyone like unity

Some do - nobody in my office does.
We all ended up moving to Gnome Shell or Xubuntu, though one guy does switch between the two a bit.

My wife hated 11.x so much she went out and bought Win7....

Re: Photo & Video editing program suggestions

    Darktable seems pretty slick, actually.

For my own testing, I'm going to check out some of my photos that require me to apply more advanced post processing, and see how these tools do.
