    Make sure you didn't burn the disc as a data disc with the iso on it. You have to use the "Burn image" (or similar) option in the burning software that you use.

    That's probably because you run those apps as the root user, and root has no fancy gtk themes set. You can set one by running

    gksudo gnome-theme-manager

    Ah, I fixed the problem with update-grub naming the kernels Debian instead of Ubuntu. Just edit the update-grub script by hand (/sbin/update-grub). Look for the line:
