I face with this issue only using 64-bit Ubuntu.
In my 32-bit system I have no problem ;)
vBulletin is a non-free but open source product. You can do all the modifications you want.

I use Eclipse PDT for PHP development.
It's a shame that, Ubuntu doesn't have an eclipse-pdt package available.
