I forgot that I had that selected. I was having issues with my NVIDIA card and thought it was the drivers so was desperate enough to get on the edge. The video issues just kept getting worse and it...
The updates fixed everything.
Thanks a lot!
OK, so I've booted on the previous kernel and since then have been offered a bunch of updates. How would I know if any of these updates are to address the issue I am facing? Is it reasonable to...
Thanks for advising me that this is a known issue. I hope there is a fix soon but since I am not quite dead in the water I can probably wait for it.
I don't know how to boot to the previous kernel...
After checking the log with tail -n25 /var/log/apt/history.log I see the following were applied today. Sorry for the wall of text, not sure where the lines should break.
I did not pay close attention to what new bits came today but after the reboot, the audio no longer works and I cannot shutdown using the DE UI. The soft touch buttons above the keyboard give mixed...
I've been running 12.10 for the longest time and was having what appeared to be video problems so opted to switch to NVIDIA drivers. Problems persisted so I upgraded to 13.04 but that didn't solve...
This happened to me again this morning.
Thanks for that link. I did come across that in my googling but since that issue is on first boot after install and mine up until now has been an intermittent issue I am reluctant to try it.

Over 70 views and nobody has any advice? Would it help if I provided the syslog?
Now and then, my HP EliteBook 8540w laptop won't show the Fallback DE on boot. Purple flashes briefly, then the drumbeat for logon sounds, mouse pointer is all I see on a black screen. I can blindly...
I tried running sudo hp-setup but it ended in an error and the test print at the end would not print. Thought it might have something with how I setup the USB on the JetDirect but every other option...
Would details of the print server help?
HP JetDirect: J6035G
Firmware Version: M.25.54
I think Windows 7 is using port 9100 printing. USB set to unidirectional.
Printer is connected to the network with HP JetDirect external unit. Ubuntu discovers it but fails to add.
The following is in syslog. Is there another place I should also look?
Recent updates on the 6510b resolved this yellow snow problem.
I decided to just leave the /home/* folder the same and just renamed the account. When I changed the password in "Users and Groups" the keyring ended up being out of sync.
I found the tread...
Well... it looks like CorpIT is putting a kybosh on my original plan. Last I heard, I'm supposed to dispose of them, not just lessen the Microsoft and other license costs.
Still, I hate to toss...
BTW, thanks for sticking with me on this. If I am slow to provide answers it's because CorpIT does not want me to work on this on company time so I'm relegated to do this on my breaks or after hours.
mportaluser@HP-Compaq-nc6320:~$ id mportaluser

mportaluser@HP-Compaq-nc6320:~$
Confirmed that the name is in fact mportaluser.
The command did not throw an error so I think I got the name right. If I repeat the command then it says that mportaluser is already added. None the less, I will run the sanity checks tomorrow.
The user without privilege that I setup is mPortal User so I believe the shortname mportaluser is what I would use with the above command.
sudo adduser mportaluser netdev
Unfortunately that did...
I don't want workarounds. I don't want to elevate a user to be able to make 'Available to all users'.
Is this issue a regression that started with 12.04? Should I consider an older version? ...
So... nobody knows? Is this a problem only in 12.10? I don't understand how this could go unresolved for so long if that is the case.
Should I give up on 12.10 and try 12.04? Can anyone say if...
The particular wireless SSID that my non-admin user wants to connect to is not on the list because it has never been connected to. The laptop is back in my office and the SSID is at my user's house....
