Did you activate the PPA's?
I just go into Synaptic and remove them.
I always leave 3 kernels in grub just in case I start experimenting and bork my set up.
Just remove the Generic Linux Images you don't need the Synaptic...
Have you checked you software sources list at: System>Admin>Software sources ?

I added sdennie's(sp) script also for the automatic kernel build update. That does correct the issue from what I understand. I also made not of the symlink just in case I run into an X-org problem.
