The package is called avant-window-navigator, not avant-window-manager ;)
"globalmenu" is what you're looking for.
I don't see how Gnome-Do or Avant are related to this
Open gconf-editor, go to apps > metacity > general and make sure your button layout is set to menu:minimize,maximize,close.
It should tell you that a newer version is installed and ask if you want to install the other one (or make you uninstall the new one first, then install). You can't have both at the same time.
Thanks a lot, this one did the trick for me. A few more hours with the nasty rendering of 3.5 and I would be blind as a raccoon :D

Last time I had the same problem, though I had the extra tuxguitar packages. What fixed it was going to Settings -> Sound and selecting Real Time Sequencer under MIDI Sequencer and Java Sound...

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
On a new line in the end of the file add
blacklist pcspkr
And reboot your PC.
Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Then Alt+S or click Shut Down
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
After the installation you should have it in your preferences menu. You can also run it with "ccsm".
I recommend you to install the package...
What video card do you have and what drivers are you using?
Move your themes to /usr/share/themes/ and icons to /usr/share/icons/. You'll still be able to change them trough the appearance settings menu but they'll also apply to root windows as synaptic.
