Not always an option - especially on older computers.
Sounds like the .iso got copied to the disk instead of installed on it. What shows on the disk if you view it from another computer?
Now, would someone like to offer some helpful advice - even if it's "upgrade and use your backup"?

You've tried sudo or sudo -i?
You might try their forum:
You can redirect the output and attach it as a file.
less /etc/network/interfaces > output.txt
There's a better way mentioned around here somewhere that pastes the content of the file...
