I had the same problem with javaldx. I got it to work by executing the following lines as root. I assume www-data's home-directory is /var/www. I admit to not knowing why it helps.

I got the same problem with root login prompt. I got rid of it by redefining the default shell (changed in Ubuntu 6.06 from /bin/bash to /bin/dash for performance).
