I do not if it is possible to get 3D in vmware;
in virtualbox it may work (afaik).
Maybe someone else knowing this about virtual machines?

Which Ubuntu version do you run?
A fully updated 11.04 works with Sandybridge graphics.
If it is 10.04 LTS,no need to compile the stuff,use glasen's ppa:
sudo add-apt-repository...

sudo apt-get purge nvidia-current
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable

gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub
and add "nomodeset" ,like
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"

There are no graphic drivers for your old card to install.
Guess you need to update your kernel.

The drivers are part of the kernel.
You need at least 2.6.38 for it.
