Interestingly enough, it plays the three drum beats when the login screen appears when turning the computer on, but no other sounds.

I think you meant system>preferences>sound, and I tried changing the music movies to every device/sound server that was available and tested each one. OSS and ALSA threw this error:
audiotestsrc...
Unfortunately the only switch I have is IEC958. Unless there is a way to enable the digital output switch I don't think I can disable it. Thanks for the reply though!

I'm using Logitech MX Revolution. And for an advanced mouse settings program, search the forums for 'btnx'. It's not in the repos, but it's a great utility for configuring the many buttons on a mouse.
