    You might have to mount the harddisk when you boot with the live cd.
    Assuming your only running 1 harddisk, it's more than likely named sda1.
    If that's the case, just do this

    mount -t /dev/sda1...

    sudo su
    That way he wouldn't have the security issues involved in actually setting a root password

    A friend at work thought this might be a permissions issue. Is it possible the vpn service is owned by root and won't start for any user other than root?
