    Use "screen" for this.

    After logging in, run

    screen

    Then run your application. To detach press Ctrl-A, then D.

    Then you can log out without killing the running process.

    .NET/Mono applications do have the exe extension (even in linux). The Mono interpreter handles the execution. Same goes for wine. This is why you can have .exe files running in linux.

    Wine applications shows as "app.exe" in the system monitor (omitting the "wine" part). Otherwise it could be a .NET/Mono application.

    Does the disk has the SMART feature? Check in System/Administration/Disk Utility if there is a failure.
