What you are doing with xrandr is accomplised with the "nvidia-settings" program when you set up multiple monitors. For the NVIDIA proprietary driver, no command line input is required. (At least on...
Works fine out of the box with the NVIDIA proprietary driver using twinview. So if you have NVIDIA graphics, each monitor shows up in the desktop settings.
