Never mind, solved it by booting from another hard drive with ubuntu with same username and password registered.
Help please!
I can't log in, it just returns to login screen after I type the password and enter, no error message.
I tried doing ctrl alt F3 and others, but there it claims password is wrong and i...
Thanks everyone for contributing your thoughts.
I have not actually tried the idea yet but a physical selector switch must be the safest and simplest way to have multiple OS's on the same computer....
I just read that hot plugging capability is actually part of the SATA specification.
In any case, it wouldn't actually be hot plugged, one would simply switch to the wanted SSD drive before turning...
OK, maybe have the switch recessed so it doesn't get flicked by accident.
(Are SSD sata drives hot-pluggable?)
The 2nd computer idea is a tad expensive, lol!
My new setup uses a 43" 4k TV screen...
I've been using Lubuntu for years but now need to have one machine dual booting with the intrusive spyware that is MS Windows 10.
Rather than doing it the software way I was thinking of just having...
Ok, thanks folks for listening. I wish I knew a way to tell Canonical. Too busy IRL to do it now though.
I "help" by recommending it to people but what I see now is endless changes being made that people don't want (Unity, for a major one and I gather they now want to dump firefox) instead of fixing...
It's an Orion 1770a with vga output, 1280x1024 60 and has lasted for years. I could get it working up to about Ubuntu 9.x, then even longwindedly farting around with xrandr stopped working too.
If...
Of course it's on topic! The thread is about changes to Ubuntu, and them being pointless or not.
They should fix stuff that's not working properly before changing stuff that ain't broken.
I don't need a dock.
It's like cars. You get the one you want and then stick with it.
No point in getting a car that might turn into a JCB or a tricycle next month.
These endless and frequent...
Well DUH! Go search for "resolution"!
It's an issue that affects countless thousands which could be solved by a GUI where you simply punch in the resolution and refresh rate you want instead of...
Instead of endless pointless changes they should improve the reliability of what's there, like:
How about making a GUI where you can set your undetected monitor to the correct resolution?
I...
Oh dear, I see what the problem is.
Nobody who knows how to write Linux is actually able to make a GUI so one can set *ANY* desired resolution manually.
When are the monitor resolution peroblems going to be solved? Countless thousands of people have monitors that are not detected and are stuck on low resolution. Long winded "fixes" either don't work...
Why would anyone want to use a google product? They are spyware!
Yipppeee it worked!
Now WTF doesn't Ubuntu do this automatically?
Next job: get it to detect a 4gb sd card, and my monitor..... :-(
I have ALAWAYS had problems with Ubuntu not detecting one of my monitors. You'd think some geek would have fixed this eternal, serious and most basic Linux problem but they are more into their...
Maybe not relevant but I had a problem getting online and changed the ipv6 setting from "Automatic" too "ignore" which cured the problem.
I had a similar problem with being unable to connect with the wired connection no matter what I did. In the end I changed the ipv6 setting from "automatic" to " ignore" and that cured the problem.
This is NOT SOLVED for most people here!!!!
Ubuntu and Diabol/Canon- ical are as ***t as ever at dealing with unrecognised monitors. FFS solve this problem properly!
Tried uninstalling 11.04 and installing 10.04.2. STILL no joy adjusting the resolutions using the xrandr method. I get cvt to generate a modeline for 1280x1024 60 resolution but my monitor tells me...
Tried using xrandr but using the cvt and gst tools creates the wrong numbers and my monitor goes into safe mode telling me to lower the speeds.
It seems that over the yaers of ignoring this problem,...
No simple way to change resolution on undetected monitors.
The search facility on these forums is mank (even more so if you are stuck in the wrong resolution).
The resolution problem has been...
I have struggled with screen resolutions for many years now!
It's the same with every new release: They fix things that ain't broken and never fix this, the most basic of problems.
One should be...
