Had to change 'localhost' to 127.0.0.1 to make it work..

127.0.0.1 fixed the problem for me.

Tried editing the dim settings in gconf-editor to no avail.

Use Totem for videos. It doesnt dim the display.

But, I have a laptop and the white noise generated (you gotta listen closely) if I turn off the "power saving mode" would take up some battery...so I guess I gotta live with the...

The font trick worked!! I reduced it to '9' and its back to normal for me now!!

I'm on Windows XP Classic theme now...the fat gnome panel really got me bugged...switching now!

I reinstalled Ubuntu 8.04 yesterday (VMWare screwed the old one up) and ever since I've been trying to reduce the size of the gnome-panel from its default 24 to 20...

This worked on my old...

Try this before starting xserver:

sudo rm /tmp/.X0-lock

hit enter and enter your password.

now type 'startx'
