It turned out that my problem was generated because I upgraded a version of Ubuntu that was installed using Wubi.
The only solution I found was to reinstall Ubuntu.

The System is Ubuntu 10.10 server.
This started after I installed OpenVPN and bridge-utils....
Could your /etc/hosts file be messed up somehow?
I am by no means an expert, but what does your hosts-file look like?
gksudo gedit /etc/hosts

Did you originally install Ubuntu within Windows (Wubi), or was this a normal installation?
The reason I ask is that I had a somewhat simular problem myselsf, which I generated because I upgraded...
Another thing to remember is that some software vendors, like for instance Zimbra, only develop software that runs on (some of) the LTS-versions of Ubuntu.
