    It should tell you that a newer version is installed and ask if you want to install the other one (or make you uninstall the new one first, then install). You can't have both at the same time.

    Change your launcher from "gnome-terminal" to "gnome terminal --geometry=55x17" (or whatever size you want). Without the quotes of course :P

    Move your themes to /usr/share/themes/ and icons to /usr/share/icons/. You'll still be able to change them trough the appearance settings menu but they'll also apply to root windows as synaptic.
