    [SOLVED] Re: behavior of "nice"

Yes, that helps. At least now gridengine jobs appear to share equal time with non-gridengine jobs, regardless of nice level. They wont go to low cpu usage, but that's better than dominating other...

    [SOLVED] Re: behavior of "nice"

    It just gets stranger.

I tried launching a large number of

    schedtool -B -n 20 -e bash -c stress -c 1

jobs with gridengine and then at the command line launched a bunch of

    stress -c 1

    [SOLVED] Re: behavior of "nice"

Good idea. I will try that. I was submitting binaries to gridengine, but if I submit a shell script, perhaps processes spawned from the evoked shell script will honor the nice value (since they are...

    [SOLVED] Re: behavior of "nice"

After a bit of searching, I figured it out. It turns out that if a program is connected to a tty, its priority is not influenced by nice. If you background them however, you will see the correct...

    [SOLVED] behavior of "nice"

I am testing some heavy loads on a server to see if I can get some processes to back off using "nice". The machine has 16 virtual cores. It appears that setting a high nice value has no effect on...

[all variants] Force fsck -c -c on reboot

I know how to force an fsck on reboot. I am wondering however if there is a way to add bad block checking as well. There would have to be a way to pass command switches directly to e2fsck. I have not...

    [SOLVED] Re: ufw blocks dnsmasq

In my experience, people unable to suggest specifics are posing. (I think ignorant is the wrong word choice. Cheeky, unappreciative and obnoxious perhaps, but not ignorant.)

    [SOLVED] Re: ufw blocks dnsmasq

The solution was to purge ufw and reinstall. The defaults work fine with dnsmasq so it must have been one of my changes. I was able to setup forwarding and SNAT without blocking dnsmasq. I actually...

    [SOLVED] Re: ufw blocks dnsmasq

So I should let anyone sending UDP packets out on port 53 access any of my ports? That seems to defeat the purpose of a firewall.

There is always more to learn. Thanks for the resource. I...

    [SOLVED] ufw blocks dnsmasq

I am using dnsmasq to proxy dns requests (NOT as a dhcp server). What that means is my firewall machine is setup to accept request from the internal network on port 53 and forward those to an...

  15. Re: Why is the quality of science education declining in America?

A few of the best, but probably not the majority. The best minds I know chose science over financial considerations. You can make a good living at it. Going into quant finance is more about chutzpah...
  16. Re: [C++] Most efficient way to search in a vector

Do you mean space or time efficient? Energy efficient? These are all different concepts.

You can use an external index, something like

    that maps each string to...

Re: Bash programming looping over input files

You probably already found the typo, but notice that you loop over i and then use j in the "do" section. Also, you must use backticks around 'seq'. It should be something like

Re: Mendeley for scientific papers management

My version of Mendeley handles the number-to-issue "issue" perfectly when importing. With the new OOffice plugin, I no longer use latex, so I can't speak to the exporting of bibtex files.
