Re: White House Linux Migration Petition

I personally too would have been fine with GNU/Linux being the niche market - for one, I think it brings about more freedom with regard to development, etc, if you are not answerable to a larger...

Re: White House Linux Migration Petition

Moving over an entire government's platform is indeed a Leviathan task, and is not accomplished in a day's task, but it can be done starting out small - how about this approach? - Declare a public...

Re: White House Linux Migration Petition

Sorry for double-posting, but this deserved its own reply.

Maybe not in Unity yes - Unity itself is not obligated to give you this option of moving the sidebar - the devs make this stuff and...

Re: White House Linux Migration Petition

Nobody would like to see Ubuntu or GNU/Linux be "forced" upon the masses - forcing would only serve to replace one tyrant (Microsoft) by another (us, in that event).

I never said Bug #1 is about...

Re: White House Linux Migration Petition

Yes. In Ubuntu Land, this war goes by the name of Bug #1. I think it is very much real.

Also, I believe there is an organization by the name of FSF, which strives towards this goal every day. In...

Re: White House Linux Migration Petition

I think accepting that such a petition is not useful is accepting defeat - we might as well give up and forget about Bug #1 and the like. After all, there were petitions against SOPA and PIPA which...

Re: White House Linux Migration Petition

The issue is deeper than the initial cost - time and again government systems running on Windows have been compromized by worms/trojans:

    White House Linux Migration Petition

    Hey people!

Folks over at the Archlinux forums have created the following petition:

    White House Linux Migration Petition.

The petition has 18 signatures now, and needs 25000 by the end of...
  9. Re: Pending Changes to Tutorials and Tips.

    +1*\infty on this one!

I hope very soon to return to full force contributions to the Wiki. BTW I see some discussion about the move to SuMO on the ubuntu-doc mailing list (I haven't really...
  10. [SOLVED] Re: Nautilus extremely slow to start [Oneiric, Vaio VGNAR520E]

I believe I fixed it, though it is not clear why... I searched for the files nautilus installs using:

    $ dpkg-query -L nautilus

and then for which files were associated with nautilus:

    $...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Unity: can't switch between windows of same app

Yeah now that I am back in Ubuntu, I see that ALT + <key above TAB> opens up the cycler for windows of the current application by itself. I did not however have to do anything to enable this.

    When...
  12. [ubuntu] Re: Unity: can't switch between windows of same app

Whoa whoa whoa! I hurriedly cruised through the posts - but maybe I can elaborate on markbl's advice?

The ALT + <key above TAB> by itself does nothing at all. Now, press ALT + TAB, and you will...
  13. [SOLVED] Nautilus extremely slow to start [Oneiric, Vaio VGNAR520E]

    Hi all,

I am running an up-to-date Oneiric on my Vaio VGNAR520E, and the only showstopper is Nautilus; it takes up to 15-20 seconds to start, always graying out for a few seconds in the process....
  14. Re: There needs to be only ***ONE*** Ubuntu Wiki

Hehe... Progress has been minuscule compared to what lies ahead, but that is a constant process I believe. What I have done myself so far:
    1) Rewrote most of the first half of the opening page of...
  15. Re: There needs to be only ***ONE*** Ubuntu Wiki

Greetings everybody! I don't know who's following this yet, but it is a much more tedious process than I envisaged it would be. At the moment, I am tied up not with improving the documentation...

Re: Best Linux distro for "instant on"

It's called Ubuntu :). On a more serious note, Gentoo with a lightweight WM and no login manager is the fastest I have seen; for something that isn't as time consuming to set up, Arch with say,...

While you are at it, pray also try the 64-bit installer if you were using the 32-bit one, and see if it gives any different results.

[ubuntu] Re: Install prob on hp Pavillion

If you are trying the 32-bit installer, try using the 64-bit version - that has worked for me before when the 32-bit would hang for a long time.

    [ubuntu] Re: Kernel panic!

    Then, mount your /dev/sda as:...

  24. Re: There needs to be only ***ONE*** Ubuntu Wiki

Minor update.... I rewrote the section about using the terminal in the main page and compared the knowledge of commands to sorcery! (which it is). Linux should seem catchy to the new user!
  25. Re: There needs to be only ***ONE*** Ubuntu Wiki
