you need to configure it to boot from the cd drive in virtualbox settings.
you can have it boot from the cd drive or an iso on the hd

good choice for old pc's is dsl(dam small linux)very basic but based on debian as is ubuntu and the good thing is you can add more according to what the computer can handle

virtualbox is excellent and an ose version is in ubuntu's repo
