This was finally resolved and SOLVED a couple days ago. I had a friend take a look at it with me; he discovered that the cable going from the hard drive to the motherboard was touching the fan and...
Thanks, I'll try those as well as making sure the vents and fans are clean.
The computer was packed up and sent to System76; they looked at it and they said there is no hardware issue.
OK. I do have a battery back-up that's supposed to even out power. In fact, when the problem started, I purchased a brand new battery back-up replacement, thinking it was a power problem. I can try...
This is a follow-up to this thread:

I have a Ratel Ultra desktop which is a little over a year old (out of warranty). I installed a new version of...
I finally had time to upgrade; it still seems to be having problems. I'll submit a ticket.
Thanks, I'll try a new installation of the OS first.
I've had this computer for about a year, and it's worked well until the last time I turned it on after it had been off and unplugged for a couple weeks while we had storms in the area (not related to...
Yay! I have Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit and, after working fine for six weeks, my flash player suddenly stopped working and said I needed to update my player, but when I tried to update, it kept saying I...
No, I can't undo - or, no, I won't do any harm if I undo?
I have two computers, side by side, both have fresh new installations of Ubuntu 10.04 and there's one printer between them. I thought I'd be ambitious and see if I could network so both computers...
Thanks! That's exactly what I needed to know!

Upgrading to 10.04 seems to have helped.
I think maybe I just need to install a more upgraded version of Ubuntu. 8.10 won't upgrade anymore, so even it's outdated.
This is a System76 computer with all the original configurations:

I repartitioned, tried installing 9.04 (it installed but won't load), and then 10,04. 10.04 installed to 65 percent and is now giving me this error:
I'll take this off-forum now and email...
I found this, typed in:
root (hd0)
then after the grub> prompt, I typed kernel /boot/vmlinuz and the tab key.
I got Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition.
Per this page, I typed in...
I tried another installation, I downloaded 9.04, did the md5sum, made a CD, and installed it. It got to 5 percent (same as the other times with 10.04) but, after about 15 minutes, it just started...
Thanks, I'll try what I can and let you know what happens.
The "hash" matches fine: c19e5139e10df2626055f1d9985856d7
So it isn't the download. And since I downloaded and created a disk from two different PC's using two different operating systems (and...
Thanks, I'll try the md5sum - right now, I'm downloading Linux Mint to see if a different OS makes a difference.
I assume that, whatever I install, whether it's Ubuntu 9.04 or 10.04, or Mint, I...
Nope, I downloaded a new image on a different computer (Windows this time) and made a new disk, and it's giving me the exact same error in the same place, at 5 percent.
I'm pretty sure this is a...
So it's probably the CD/iso image that's corrupted, and not the computer itself?
I re-tried installing. It apparently already erased the file system and is giving me this error:
"Failed to create a file system.
The ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of SCS13 (0,0,0)...
I've been having intermittent problems with my Ratel almost since I got it, with freezing and then sometimes not booting properly. It was suggested that I upgrade to 10.04, but my issue was...
I've had my Starling for almost a year and a half; I haven't had any problems with it yet. Battery seems fine, everything works. I've had trouble with the wireless card, but that's because I have an...
I saw someone on YouTube taking his Starling apart to replace something (I think he was rebuilding it?) Looking at the bottom of my Starling and the YouTube video, it looks like I'd have to remove...
I have a first generation Starling that's still running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. It runs great after a year; I've had no problems with it.
I've done nothing to it; it still has:...
