I cant comment on the usb installation method as i havent used that method yet. But i think a normal CD is only 700-800mb and Ubuntu 13.10 i think is larger than that now. So you may have to slow...

My ethernet works just fine, but my wireless usb adapter(edimax) doesnt work so well in anything other than ubuntu 12.10 . its a driver issue as far as i know.
Im not much help, but i do recommend downloading 12.04 lts and doing a fresh install.. Like other person stated, it can avoid a lot of headaches and would be quicker.
I personally would use a windows install cd to edit the partition. Using jelly bean to save a .txt file of all my reg keys to be on the safe side, isnt a bad idea either.

Its been a while since i played with wine. but dont you install via ppa, then right click and select open with wine for the program you want to run?
you sure its the cmos battery? the time changing and not updating and a few other things sounds like that but the comp freezing after running for a while sounds like hardware issues.

I have heard of upgrades going badly. Worse case you could do a fresh install of 13.04.

You should be able to install the drivers via "Additional Drivers", or can download them from nvidia.
To fix the gedit issue(cerdit to myromance or w/e :D) go to file>preferences>behavior>exe.text files tick "ask each time". Then on the gfx driver .deb right click>properties>tick run as exe.

I had the same issue, drivers made no difference. But I found a thread about updating to the 3.9 kernel, it fixed my audio problems.
