Re: Windows XP style start menu for gnome?

    Me too

    I miss:

    "Start > a"

... and then direct access to the Favorites (i.e. bookmarks tree) with the arrow keys. Having to open the browser first and *then* the bookmarks tree is a pain...

[all variants] Linux equivalent of WinReminders?

I have found the piece of software I was looking for:

    http://www.winreminders.com/

It can send a reminder by e-mail.

Is this another job for WINE or is there a Linux equivalent?

    Re: Text to Speech

    Thanks!

    I'll take a look.

Presumably seeking "text-to-play" software is just a bit optimistic at the moment?!

    Re: Text to Speech

Is there such a thing as text-to-dialogue software?

The idea would be that the computer would give the different characters of a play different voices so that you could hear the conversation.

    If you install this:

    Re: 3D game map editor

The closest thing I have found to what I am looking for, in the world of games, is Blitzkrieg II by CDV. A close second was Sudden Strike III by Fireglow. These are not Linux games that I know of....

    3D game map editor

Do any Linux games contain a 3D game map editor. I am actually looking for a terrain manager but a game might be an alternative source.

Have just installed 9.10 where I was using 8.10 before and am having the same problem with Ogg Vorbis files. Still investigating.

Re: Issues with a few WINE games.

Thanks for your reply. At least I now know what the problem is.

Given that some of the programs I want to try in Wine don't need 3D graphics I wonder if I should just remove the graphics card.

Re: Issues with a few WINE games.

You could be on to something here.

    I did the:

    sudo lshw -html >> info.html

... thing, and the "display" box is white with not much info in it, where most of the boxes are yellow. It simply...

Re: Issues with a few WINE games.

I have the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 9.04 installed at the moment and experiments with Wine are bearing little resemblance to the results reported at WineHQ. Maybe I should try the 32 bit version?

    Re: Terragen equivalent

Can anyone recommend a program capable of producing detailed top down maps. I don't need the full 3D.

Dunjinni was too crude. Sudden Strike III's map editor didn't give enough detail, Blitzkrieg...
