I looks like we're having the same problem, though I am on Intrepid. (Pressing a multimedia button (mute, increase volume, decrease volume) makes the correct GUI-notification appear, but does not...
Another solution is running
sudo /usr/NX/bin/nxserver --history clear
Not sure if that has pretty much the same as restarting the server, though a bit nicer if others are currently logged...

I had that same problem and solved it by installing the package gstreamer0.10-esd .
That installs the file /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstesd.so .. (the same one that NoMachine...
