ViMMeD, the ${if_up interface} variable in conky does not work as expected. As you can see from your results. A workaround for this problem is discussed on this thread [ubuntuforums.org].

I can confirm that as of ubuntu 10.10 with conky 1.8.0, the ${if_up interface} variable in conky does not work as intended.

You could also try tilda. It is a terminal that is hidden on your desktop and when you press F1 it drops down from the top of the screen. You press F1 again and it hides. Very convenient.
