    Since I have been away from Ubuntu for a bit I know
    little about overcoming installing to non pae CPU's I will

    I do believe I remember using Classic Desktop with 11.10 is that still an option for OP.
    It does run on his hardware.
    EDIT: 11.10 is running short on time also and 12.04 is default pae...

    I like it. But formatted you will only get total of 289 gig or so I believe.
    Just leave 4 or 5 gig for swap. Cannot hurt to have good size swap.
    Make your partitions in Gparted first would be nice...

    This I have done before, installed Fedora without LVM, I always make my partitions before installing and it is a choice in Anaconda installer to use or not use LVM.

    Any time you are adding a shortcut. You have to hit add then under command use the
    script to run it with your key command. Like open a Terminal "gnome-terminal" without quotes.
