Where did you acquire chrome from? The version I have is working fine, from the chromium-browser beta repository. To add it, from terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chromium-daily/beta

firefox
and
chromium-browser
Do you get a stack of errors coming out when you run VMWare player from the terminal?
Applications->Accessories->Terminal
Then type
vmware-player
(or whatever the name of the app is)...
As in:
