you can duplicate the crash by typing:
sudo aticonfig --set-powerstate=1
now... this is what finally fixed it for me:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorgI think that fixed it for me, however it's a problem that doesn't happen all the time, so it's hard to be sure

reboot and go into recovery mode, goto the command line and login as root
try:
apt-get purge localesor
dpkg --purge localesthen after thats done

now I found out the *CORRECT* way to solve this problem, besides just going back to ALSA
sudo apt-get install libflashsupport
probably the easiest way is using synaptic, under the "package" drop down, use "force version" and "lock version"
theres other ways, but that is probably the easiest way to do it
