For anyone reading this, I discovered the problem was limited for me to using realVNC on windows. As a workaround, using ultraVNC for windows instead stops the problem from happening.
Over 2 years later, on ubuntu 12.04, this is still occuring :-(
Anyone have any suggestions?
In terms of hardware go with anything intel. Intel graphics, intel wireless, etc.
The intel gear has generally been the best supported in linux for some time.
I guess it depends if you are looking into "programming linux applications" or "programming under linux".
The first would involve python, c, etc because you are looking to write native linux...
I am having this problem too. entering the IP adress seems to fix it.
Strangely it has only just started to occur recently. I havent changed anything with my setup. Maybe it was a recent update...
for me the trick was to install the guest software, then run
sudo displayconfig-gtk
then use choose a generic model screen that has the same resolution as my screen. Then i can choose whatever...
There is a note about problems with brother drivers in 8.04 on the brother linux website.

For the record, I was getting this problem when trying to create a visual class in eclipse and using the drag and drop swing tools. The widgets in the preview were not showing, just with a little red...
I also had this problem when trying to compile the apple "bonjour" mDNSResponder libraries under ubuntu feisty beta.
adding -fno-stack-protector fixed it for me too. Thanks.
