Upgraded to 14.04 and have no access to internet. The icon on the top shows Auto Ethernet. Windows can connect.
And WIFI is active in the house. (I write this from a laptop which connects just fine)...

What do you mean by 'Compiling'? How do I so that?

I got to mirror.cc.columbia.edu by running :

Synaptic->Settings->REpos-->Ubuntu ...

Updates are sometimes slow.
I see mirror.cc.columbia.edu listed 14 times. Is this normal?

The 3 non-ubuntu sources at the end are fine.

A Samsung laptop came with 4 logigal partitions : boot, Windows1, Windows 2, and Reinstallation. I deleted the first 3 partitions and installed Ubuntu 12.04 ver 32. which worked fine for a while but...

After the latest update yesterday the icons are again large.

The errors were apparently resolved with:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

Also when trying to 'Tell the system, that the new Java must be the default' (Instructions #10. ), I get same errors:

No problems removing old Java and downloading new one to /OPT.
But then the Instructions say :'Inform the system and make the new JRE the default

I have downloaded and installed the latest Java Version 6 Update 23 and in /OPT i have 2 folders : /opt/java/32/jre1.6.0_23 and jre1.6.0_23 .

Just as a follow-up:

I changed the Desktop view from UNR to GNOME and miraculously TrueCrypt reappeared in the Applications/Accessories and is working fine. Guess that it was somewhere all along...

TrueCrypt was in the Applications and was actually working.

But after restarting the laptop, Truecrypt is no longer there...

this has happened also before.
