You have to compile mplayer yourself. I did the same mistake thinking the old mplayer I had for CoreAVC 1.9.5 would work, it doesn't.

And for me, the loading times ain't really noticable. If you think they're slow, try "apt-get install preload", then run mplayer/coreavc a few times...
