[ubuntu] How to wipe video memory?

When I boot my computer it always shows me briefly (a part of) my wallpaper image right before the login screen comes up. I have a dual boot setup and when have been using Windows and then boot...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: [SOLVED] Remotely connect to Windows desktop

Today I could finally test the VNC connection with my friend. It works! This is what I have done to remotely connect to his Windows Vista Desktop:

    On my friend's PC:
    - Install UltraVNC server....
  3. [ubuntu] Re: Upgrade to 8.10: Only 137 GB recognized

In case somebody is still interesting in this topic and stumbles upon it: I "solved" my problem by doing a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10.

Strangely enough I didn't encounter the problem then. Maybe...
  4. [other] Re: Access drives outside Virtualbox

In the Virtualbox settings of your Virtual machine (Windows XP) you can configure Shared folders. These can point to any location outside the Virtual OS, but is within the host OS (Ubuntu).
  5. [ubuntu] Re: Remotely connect to Windows desktop

I am sorry for the router confusion. :)

Thank you all for your answers. Connecting to a remote Windows desktop seems a lot easier than I thought. I hope it will work out like that.
  6. [ubuntu] Re: Remotely connect to Windows desktop

I thought UltraVNC has better Windows Vista support then TightVNC. But maybe I am wrong. I have no experience with either of them. I will try TightVNC instead then.
  7. [ubuntu] Re: Remotely connect to Windows desktop

We both use our own router, and have our own IP address to the outside world. (My friend lives in a different town.) I guess I should be using his real IP address then right? Not his locale area...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: Remotely connect to Windows desktop

Thanks tweakedenigma and howefield. I am not too fond of running Wine, so I usually try to avoid it. I think I will follow tweakedenigma's instructions and install a vnc server on my friend's pc next...

    This is the situation:

    - I have an Ubuntu 8.04 machine.
    - My friend has a Windows Vista machine.
    - We are both behind a router.

  10. [ubuntu] Re: Upgrade to 8.10: Only 137 GB recognized

I am pretty sure it is not the partitioning. I have four partitions on my hard disk:
sda1: 10 GB, containing a new fresh installation of Ubuntu 8.04.
sda2: 10 GB, containing my messed up Ubuntu...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Upgrade to 8.10: Only 137 GB recognized

I have done the upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 beta with Synaptic. Just with the GUI.
  12. [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Upgrade to 8.10: Only 137 GB recognized

Yesterday it was very rainy and I decided to upgrade my Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 beta. That was a mistake.

Intrepid Ibex (8.10) beta does not recognize my full hard disk. I have a 160 GB hard disk in...

[ubuntu] Re: Any Help Appreciated - Partitioning

I think Nautilus recognizes your entire sda disk, but since it is not (entirely) mouted, it just put the total disk size in Places view.

Maybe you could try to mount your partiton in fstab like...

    [ubuntu] Re: Switching Distroz

I have no experience with either Alcohol 120% or Rawdump running through Wine. But you might want to check out some Linux alternatives for those. I'd suggest you could use 'rsync' (or grsync for a...

[ubuntu] Re: Remove Evolution - Again

Are you use that the Gnome-desktop environment is removed when you remove Evolution? As far as I know only the ubuntu-desktop package will be removed. This just a so-called meta-package. It doesn't...
  16. [ubuntu] Re: Reading email in Evolution not reflect in Gmail account

I don't think it is possible to have the email status of your Gmail server change to 'read' automatically when using pop.

I am using IMAP with Thunderbird and for me it works fine. I have no...

[ubuntu] Re: New install help required

You could use rsync to back-up your home directory, or even your entire disk (if you have a spare disk).

Also, compiz has an option to export your current settings. You could import those settings...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: If I install KDE apps will it harm my Ubuntu Hardy Installation...?

    If you use
    sudo apt-get remove ...
to remove stuff, the downloaded files will remain on your computer (in /var/cache/apt/archives)

    If you use
    sudo apt-get purge ...
    to remove stuff, the...
  19. [ubuntu] Re: If I install KDE apps will it harm my Ubuntu Hardy Installation...?

You could remove the entire KDE environment and all its applications first. To do so follow the Psychocats instructions.

When you are back to pure Gnome, you could then install just the KDE...

    [ubuntu] Re: copy file

Assuming that "david" is in the /home directory, use this command in a terminal.

    sudo cp /home/david/pc_efi_v80/boot_v8 /boot/
You'll have to use sudo here, since only root has write permissions...

Poll: Re: HOWTO: Wireless Security - WPA1, WPA2, LEAP, etc.

I thought I found my nirvana by installing Wicd, but I was wrong. I got some issues with Wicd too, so (after upgrading to Hardy Heron) I went back to the network-manager and this nice how-to.

Poll: Re: HOWTO: Wireless Security - WPA1, WPA2, LEAP, etc.

Thanks for pointing that out wieman01!

I tried them both. Wifi-radar didn't work too well for me. It shows all the wireless networks in range, but it does not show the signal strengths nor the...
